Hiroo Onoda, 84, is a former member of an Imperial Japanese Army intelligence unit, an elite commando during World War II who was sent to Lubang Island in the Philippines in 1944 to conduct guerrilla warfare and gather military intelligence. Trained in clandestine operations, his mission was to sneak behind enemy lines, conduct surveillance and survive independently until issued new orders. He did exactly that for the next 30 years. Long after Japan’s surrender in 1945, he continued to serve his country in the jungle, convinced that the Greater East Asia War was still being fought. He lived on mostly bananas and mangoes, evading many Japanese search parties and the local Philippine police, all of whom he believed were enemy spies. In March 1974, at age 52, a Japanese man who had run across Onoda brought his former superior to the island with instructions that relieved him of his military duties. After a brief return to Japan, he moved to Brazil where he became a successful rancher. He came back to Japan in the 1980s and established the Onoda Nature School with the goal of educating children about the value of life. His incredible adventures on Lubang are detailed in his book “No Surrender: My Thirty-year War.”

So, finally the long wait is over. The new line up of iPad's are out in the Indian market. They are slimmer, smaller, lighter and better in every possible way when compared with the older generation of their siblings.

Is it worth the purchase?

If you don't own an ipad yet, you can now think of owning one. And its no more just the mini to consider for the size, the iPad Air too is quite small when compared to the older generation iPad's. So, choose the right one that fits your usage. For 'home only' users, I would recommend a iPad Air. Mini 2 is for the mobile users.

Mumbai - A city under perpetual construction

A view of the city landscape with soaring concrete and the machines that build it.

Mumbai city is dreaming big. The local authority, business and Realtors want to make it a mega city. I am not sure if the people of the city share the same vision. For someone who was born in this city, its already changed a lot to be recognized or compared with its former self.

Commuting daily to work in town from my sub-urban abode, I see the new slowly and surely creeping into the space of the old. Change is part of any cities growth. But it should consider the collective interest of all and not just a few. With residential apartment cost that matches or beats the cost of housing in big cities like Tokyo, New York and London, one wonders - is this city changing for good or for worst.

Jolla - Smart phone with a personality

Ever since the announcement of the Jolla phone, I have been eagerly anticipating the release this new phone in the market. My interest in Jolla brew with two key ingredients -

• It was started by Nokia's ex employee's.
• It was open source 

The nokia culture and design has always been the key to its success. I could understand the disappointment when Nokia abandoned the Meego  project and went on to embrace the Windows platform. Open source has always been the heart of Nokia's software philosophy. So, for someone who always loved their handsets, the liking for opensource went beyond just trust. It was also in experience.

When Jolla was announced, they got Sailfish Operating System as the default opensource OS for their handset. For those who have experienced The Nokia N9, the user experience would seem very familiar.

Now that the Finish company has just launched this handset for the EU market, I can only hope and anticipate its launch in Asia, and specifically India. Check out this advert for the handset which sets the tone for Jolla's user base.

Straight Jacket is a short series by Ichirō Sakaki with illustrations by Yō Fujishiro, published by Fujimi Shobo. It was made into a three part anime series which was then released worldwide as an anime movie.

Among the harsh battles, he will face a sin he committed in the past.

Its a story of redemption, friendship and love. Although they all are layered into this fictional dark thriller involving sorcery, balck magic and demons. A good watch. Enjoy!

Friendship knows no boundaries - Man and Bear

This video is from a commercial Finnish clothing company Makia. I love the relationship that exists between this old man and a 450+ Kg Bear, Juuso. The Bear is afraid of bees and the old man is upset that he cannot understand his friend speak. Very sweet and heartening to see such a relationship.

Diwali (also called Deepavali) is a festival of lights that celebrates the triumph of good over evil and the return of King Ram (from the Hindu mythology) to his kingdom from exile and after defeating Ravana. This is based on the Hindu mythology of Ramayana.

This is the biggest holiday of the year, just like Christmas. From modern day perspective, the holiday spirit starts off for us from here on, all the way up to new year. Yeah!  

About the snap:
I snapped this pic with a Nokia Lumia 900 at Select City Mall in New Delhi during my visit there. I came across a paper lamp shop which had a very contemporary take on lamps and lighting. Loved the stacked view of all this wonderful and colorful lamps that they had at the stall. Bob Marley, Jim hendrix and Buddha next to one another is simply ... (as John Lenon puts it) Imagine!  

Asura's Wrath - The Movie (Game Play Cut Scenes)

Asura is a know character in the Indian mythology. So when i discovered this movie on YouTube, I knew that this had to be a mythology. What surprised me was the 4 and half hour length that it had. Anyways, I started off to watch this epic.

Asura's Wrath - A Game for XBox & Playstation released in 2012

Asura's Wrath is an Japanese Video game produced by Kazuhiro Tsuchiya. The movie is made from the cut scenes from the game. The game was designed episodic and was termed as a multimedia game rather than a typical game. It had opening and ending credits just like episodes of a television serial. The begining got me hooked as Asura, a demigod, gets betrayed by other demigods and in doing so, looses his wife and child. His rage, there on, has no bound and he goes after the gods relentlessly trying to quell his inner rage, which he too seems to have lost control of.

The movie, though long, takes you through a journey and has been inspired from Hinduism and Buddhism and their mythologies in creating this epic fictional tale. It took me three sittings to complete this movie. But I did, and it was a great watch. It seemed to be focused on a single character, the protagonist Asura. But the layers and plot phases that get added along the way makes it an engaging journey. The climax is worth the long watch, in case you sat though it with interest.




On a side note - I know this is a game and general entertainment, so to speak.But, there was so much to take away from this movie for me. I guess, that is what got me to like it in the first place.

Found this wonderful version of Teardrops by Massive Attack performed by Igor Presnyakov on a acoustic guitar. Interesting way of creating beats on the guitar body while playing the strings.

Non-Stop - Movie Trailer (Action Thriller)

This is one of the few movies that has got me excited for a couple of reasons. One, its got Liam Nesson, an excellent actor who gives great performances, and second, its a good old fashion action thriller from the looks of the trailer. Have a look.



I just hope this movie does not end up becoming a disappointment due to a weak premise or end-plot. It seems to look and feel like the die hard generation movies which I grew up with. Hoping this one is a fun watch.

A snapped view from a Auto Rickshaw ride. They are the only challengers to the lawless drivers that the bikers are, in the city. The one thing they ensure is point to point drop service. No other public mode of transportation is so convenient. They can take you through crowded streets, lanes, highways without any hesitation and in the shortest time possible. Driven mainly by migrants to the city, these essential mode of transportation will be your first choice in suburbs (since they are not allowed to ply in the city).

Unlike other cities in India, the public transportation in Mumbai runs on the fare meter system that works. No need to ask for a rate card since the new electronic meters display the fare upfront for the passenger.

A short documentary which attempts to understand the enigmatic and influential Japanese writer Haruki Murakami. The documentary attempts to trace the journey of Murakami and understand his influences and passion for writing such masterpieces. What I like about this documentary is that it provides some beautiful scenes enacted from several of his books with the with a voice over that reads out excerpts of those scenes.

A definite recommendation for a laid back watch. And, there will be some sweet jazz as accompaniment.

I for one, am a bit disappointed with the approach of taken by Google to have their devices completely enclosed, just like what apple and Nokia/MS had stated doing. Not sure if this is a trend, but definitely, I am not for it as it takes away control from me as a user. Will this work for you? You be a better judge of that, I suppose.

Space Pirate Captain Harlock (2013) Trailer

Very excited about this movie, which will coming out this year. Its based on a manga series written and illustrated by Leiji Matsumoto. And its in 3D too. Try and get you hands on the anime series if you can. A few episodes are there on YouTube, but not in English subtitles unfortunately.




I doubt this movie will ever get released in theaters across India. So, its DVD or BlueRay viewing for me. That's ok. I just hope I get to grab the 3D version of it.

Sharing a snap I took at the dadar vegetable market, just outside the railway station.  This was an early morning scene, quite unlike the usual crowded streets that one experiences.

Five Reasons Why Iron Man 3 Sucks As A Superhero Movie

Iron Man 3 - This Saga finally ends.

Let me start by saying that this is my personal take on Iron Man 3 and I am not a critic. Just a comic/superhero fan with no favorites. Well, I like Hulk the most. But then who doesn't.

Most superhero movies, now a days, have a lot of action, special effects and 3D tossed in to save it from a bad plot. That was not the case for iron man 3. Not for I-3, for sure. Here are 5 reasons I could come up with, which I felt were responsible for the mess that I experienced. And a total disappointment the say the least. Even the charisma of Robert Downey Jr. could not help salvage the repeat view for this movie.

So, here goes ...

No. 5: Am I watching a Disney movie?
The movie starts off at such a promising note with chaos and danger engulfing the world with the Mandrin on the loose. Iron man seems to be having his own problems. You expect thing to trun worst. Just when you are bracing for the impact, the movie changes gear to something else. When you get a kid to help Iron man to get on his feet, you know where the plot if heading. The second half was so damn clear that making a prediction was like giving direction for something in your line of sight.

No. 4: Non of the characters were well-established
A superhero movie should have the main character's personality explored. Its a great opportunity to start liking the character or at least understanding them so that you have the ability to react to or feel for them. But nothing of that sort happened in this movie. It was designed around an event and all characters played for that event. There is nothing wrong in doing that. Even situations can reveal human personalities, context and past. But here, that was not the case. Mandarin had that potential, but they blew it.

Once There Was Magic In Cricket

Nothing experiences happiness like a good game of street cricket

Carnage, hammering, Storm ... these are words not associated with anything pleasant or positive. And yet, such reactions are invoked when people watch the game of cricket, more so in the new format of T20 Cricket. Its entertainment, and less of sports, so to speak. A gamble where you take the best possible scenario which otherwise would be impossible to observe and throw in a bunch of rules to keep the events tight and compact and create an concoction that's explosive, to say the least, as an outcome.

I have been a cricket fan since childhood. But that has drifted into another dimension now. Cricket for me is a shadow of its former self. A gentleman's game gone wrong. Something that was meant to be passionate now gets bid upon. Players are so busy playing for their clubs and country that they have lost out on the passion for the tribe, so to speak. When the tribe keeps changing, you are no more bonded but merely a part of something. With big money being poured in and the natural high of fame and pseudo power makes one simply corrupt.

Its not just the players or clubs or institutions, but also the fans who have started shifting alliances. And that for me is the death of a game. Or at least the decay having set in.

But the game is rocking and hugely profitable. Player are earning wages unheard of. The clubs are as rich as most football clubs in Europe  The format is nothing new. Its simply an adaptation of that the game of football saw as it evolved. So if football is not being critically looked at, why is cricket? An interesting question for which the answer lies in how much you you see your team as a team, i suppose. Club football is something that happens year after year and then there is the world cup which happens once in four years. Alliances change as patriotism takes over. But once its all over. The club legion takes prominence and life goes on. Thats not the case with cricket. And there, I believe, lies the problem.

I am no expert in this game nor a big fan in any remote way. But as a mere observation, I just want to speak out about the game that has taken a wrong turn. being commercial is not bad, but the risk of commoditization is in the culture of supply demand. That's not what sports is all about. Or at least that was not how I saw sports as.

Tickets get sold, sponsors get their hands full, clubs and player have a ball and the audience gets entertained. End of the game everyone goes home happy and content. But then, life goes on and the events of the game are forgotten just like the last movie I say, as I step out of the movie hall. If sports does not invoke strong memories, the olympics would be just one big party and nothing else. But that's not what it is, is it?

I hope people save the game while they can. Perhaps by picking up and bat and ball and hitting the nearest street corner or park for a innings of fun. You will probably get the point I am trying to make.

One Cutting Chai

I cannot say with credibility about the origin of Cutting Chai but I believe that Mumbai is one place where this concept has originated or so has the lingo. So what is Cutting Chai? Well, Chai meaning tea, when served in small portion becomes 'cutting' tea. Literally, like cutting into smaller portions.

A Cutting Chai. 

Cutting Chai is, I believe, one of the measures of inflation for us common folks. How, you might ask. Its the least your have to spend to eat or drink something when you are out of your house. Tea, a favorite hot beverage that  is consumed by most Indians is a morning necessity and a fuel to make you stay focused through the day. As of date, a cutting chai costs between 5 to 6 rupees for a glass. There was a time when it was available for 2-2.5 rupees and the quantity was way better. Now a days there are some tea stalls that still serve a rupee 2 chai but the portions will make a tequila shot glass look like a beer mug.

Finally! Ubuntu arrives on mobile handsets

I am quite excited about Canonical introducing the Ubuntu OS for mobile. Ubuntu, a Linux variant, has been powering servers around the world and has been known to enterprises, developers and institutions for years. The fact that they made it available for free to individuals and institutions alike, for so many years, is commendable. Whats interesting about the opensource community is that its a community of passionate folks who have help build and improve the OS over the years one iteration at a time.

When they announced the launch of Mobile Ubuntu, it was a turning point in the history of Ubuntu which has been lagging behind most ecosystems due to the unavailability of an environment to get it portable.
